Tata Sky takes infotainment to new heights

Sets up connection at famed 2500 year-old Phugtal monastery in Ladakh

Mumbai, August 26, 2016: Tata Sky, the pioneer of innovative services in the DTH industry, yet again pushed new boundaries by setting up a DTH connection at the illustrious Phugtal monastery, 14,000 feet above sea level. Built over 2500 years ago, the well-known Phugtal monastery, home to 150 monks is situated in the south-eastern Zanskar region, of Jammu & Kashmir.

Due to the remote location and extreme geographical conditions, Phugtal is not connected by road and lacks basic amenities of life. Tata Sky along with NDTV took up this initiative to light up the himalayas and set out with a troop of 20 mountaineers in the quest of lighting up the Phugtal Monastery with solar energy and television, providing the monastery a window to the world.

On this accomplishment, Mr. Harit Nagpal, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Sky said, “It is an alarming reality that even today there are people in remote parts of our nation who are struggling with basic necessities due to infrastructural issues. One of the most critical challenges that Tata Sky faces is to adhere to customer requests of installations at areas of lesser habitation....”

The Tata Sky team led by Anwar Hussain undertook this arduous trek along the treacherous Lungnak river to reach the iconic monastery. Horses carried the equipment and luggage during the 15 hour long strenuous trek from Ichar to Phugtal along a narrow trail on the mountains.

Tata Sky has accomplished similar tasks of setting up connections at other unimaginable locations too, such as Khardungla Pass Army Camp (highest motor able road in the world) situated at height of 17,500 feet. Other remote locations include places such as Serchu, Pang, the Chang La pass and distant villages of Kupwara, Anantnag, Uri, Baramulla district where it requires 3-4 hours of journey for an installer to merely reach the customers’ location.
